Bumble Introduces 'Opening Moves' Feature, Enhancing Women's Control in Online Dating

Bumble continues to innovate in the online dating space with the launch of its new ‘Opening Moves’ feature, which was introduced on Tuesday. This addition is designed to empower women to initiate conversations on their terms by selecting or creating prompt questions for potential matches to answer.

Since its inception in 2014, Bumble has championed a women-centric approach, giving them the primary role in initiating contact. The ‘Opening Moves’ feature builds on this foundation by providing a structured yet flexible way for women to engage with their matches without the pressure of crafting the perfect opening line.

Bumble’s CEO, Lidiane Jones, emphasized the importance of this feature, stating, “We have always believed that when you make dating better for women, you make it better for everyone. This new feature is a response to feedback from our community who expressed a desire for more agency in their dating interactions.”

The feature allows users to answer set or custom prompt questions, maintaining Bumble’s commitment to keeping women in control of the dating experience. It also supports inclusivity, as it is available to same-sex and non-binary couples, where either person can take the lead in responding.

In addition to ‘Opening Moves,’ Bumble is rolling out several other features aimed at enhancing user experience and safety. These include:

  • Dating Intentions: Users can now clearly define what they are looking for in a relationship, with options ranging from casual dating to seeking a life partner.
  • For You: This feature provides users with four curated profiles daily, tailored to their preferences and past interactions.
  • Profile Commonalities: Bumble will highlight shared interests at the top of user profiles, including favorite Spotify artists, to foster connections based on commonalities.
  • Photo Requirement: Users must upload at least four images to their profile to enhance engagement and transparency.

These features are part of Bumble’s ongoing effort to refine the online dating experience and provide users with meaningful ways to connect and communicate. If a user is unsatisfied with a response to their ‘Opening Moves’ question, they have the discretion to continue the conversation or move on, ensuring that interactions remain comfortable and controlled.
