IDF Demolishes 6 Gaza City Tunnels, Including Islamic Jihad’s Flagship Passageway

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on July 2, 2024, the successful demolition of six tunnels in Gaza City, including the flagship passageway used by Islamic Jihad. The operation is part of an ongoing effort to dismantle the militant group’s infrastructure and reduce threats to Israeli security.

The tunnels, which were strategically located in densely populated areas, served as key routes for the smuggling of weapons and movement of fighters. The flagship tunnel of Islamic Jihad, in particular, was a significant target due to its extensive network and critical role in the group’s operations.

“We have successfully destroyed six tunnels in Gaza City, including the primary passageway used by Islamic Jihad. This operation significantly hampers the group’s ability to conduct attacks against Israel,” an IDF spokesperson stated. “Our actions are part of a broader strategy to neutralize threats and ensure the safety of Israeli citizens.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the IDF’s operation, emphasizing its importance in maintaining national security. “The destruction of these tunnels is a crucial step in our ongoing efforts to protect our country from terrorist threats. We will continue to take all necessary measures to defend our nation and eliminate threats from terrorist organizations,” Netanyahu said.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also commended the IDF for their precision and effectiveness. “Our forces have once again demonstrated their capability to carry out complex operations with great success. The dismantling of these tunnels deals a significant blow to the operational capabilities of Islamic Jihad and other militant groups in Gaza,” Gallant stated.

The international community has closely monitored the situation, with reactions varying from support for Israel’s right to self-defense to concerns about the impact on civilians in Gaza. The United States reiterated its backing of Israel’s security measures. “We support Israel’s efforts to defend itself against terrorist threats. The demolition of these tunnels is a necessary step to ensure the safety of its citizens,” a US State Department spokesperson said.

The United Nations called for caution and urged all parties to avoid further escalation. “We are concerned about the potential for increased violence following these operations. It is essential that all sides exercise restraint and prioritize the protection of civilians,” said a UN representative.

The European Union emphasized the importance of finding long-term solutions to the conflict. “While we acknowledge Israel’s right to self-defense, we urge all parties to engage in dialogue and work towards sustainable peace. The destruction of infrastructure alone cannot resolve the underlying issues,” an EU representative stated.

The operation to demolish the tunnels underscores the ongoing tension and volatility in the region. The IDF remains on high alert, prepared to respond to any retaliatory actions from militant groups in Gaza.

As the situation continues to develop, the focus will be on balancing military objectives with humanitarian concerns and pursuing diplomatic efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.
