How to get Trace of Echoes (Echoing Hatred)

Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred features a brand new, super rare encounter, Echoing Hatred, which requires a Trace of Echoes to drop. Unfortunately, it’s rarer than you can possibly imagine. During our review access, the Boost Mob was able to grant us this item, and it’s possible that future PTRs will do the same, it’s easily going to be the hardest item in the game to get. I don’t recall hearing any member of the press stating that one dropped for them in the wild, and that’s with a significant amount of time played.

The good news is that it is something that anyone can pick up in the game, without having to be on Torment XII or something. The bad news is that Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred’s Trace of Echoes item is going to be unreasonably rare to find.

How to get Trace of Echoes in Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred

The good news is that the Trace of Echoes can drop from anywhere in Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred. Any barrel, corpse, enemy or boss you kill throughout the game has a remarkably low chance to drop a Trace of Echoes item. You’ll know when you get one, because it’s going to have the same color as a Mythic Unique – that familiar soft purple color.

However, it’s so rare that you may never see one drop in casual gameplay. Since the quest for Trace of Echoes, called Echoing Hatred, can only be accessed on Torment I or higher, it’s possible that the item only drops in that difficulty or higher. We’ll double-check with the developers, but it’s likely that it can drop in earlier difficulties.

To make matters worse, this is not an item you can trade! As soon as you pick up Traces of Echoes, the quest Echoing Hatred unlocks. What this means for Diablo 4 players is that they will not simply be able to visit a third party site to buy a Trace of Echoes in all likelihood. I imagine this was intentional, to keep it from being traded, bought, or sold, given how rare it is.

As far as farming goes, I recommend going through areas that are as jam-packed with enemies as you can find, on higher difficulty levels (Torment I+), as long as they do drop items. With that in mind, Infernal Hordes may not be the best way to get Trace of Echoes, though it could drop in the chests. It’s just not likely as useful, given the time it takes to complete an Infernal Hordes, compared to go to a Helltide, or Nightmare Dungeon.
