NFL fans rip Sean McVay for “horrible” game management as Rams lose to Seahawks in NFCCG

The Los Angeles Rams lost 31-27 at the Seattle Seahawks in Sunday’s NFC championship game, failing to notch a third Super Bowl appearance since returning to California in 2018. In the aftermath, fans found a scapegoat.

Throughout the game, coach Sean McVay made these rather questionable decisions:

  • Not calling for a two-point conversion after a touchdown (twice)
  • Not using a timeout to challenge a Cooper Kupp drop that would have been a first down if caught
  • Keeping returner Xavier Smith in the rotation after he muffed a punt early in the third quarter, which led to a Seahawks touchdown

Fans tore to him shortly before and after the final whistle:

NFL coaches and time/game management skills. Name a worse duo. Absolutely shambolic from Sean McVay. Two TDs where you’re down five and should go for two, then you call a timeout but don’t challenge the spot? Horrific.

Sean Mcvay needs to be fired… terrible clock management

Sean McVay once again fell apart with game management

@RamsNFL Sean Mcvay not knowing the challenge time out rules is nuts. Mcvay not going to 2! Chris Shula calling an awful game. @Les Snead- That bum Xavier Smith needs to be cut! 1st round picks need to be the back 7 cause they suck. Especially Speights!

@HoodiiMamba Sean McVay Has A History of Making Horrible Decisions in The Heat Of The Moment, And Even Worse Time/Clock Management At Absolutely Critical Times In The Game. Today’s Game At Seattle is Another Example of Those Two Things, And The Rams “D” Wasn’t Good Today

@jlbiglow sean mcvay cost the rams the superbowl with his game management in the last 1:30 of the first half and not taking the punt returner out after his first muff. 14 point swing on coaching decisions alone. not to mention not challenging the Kupp first down.

The loss spoiled a dominant effort from Matthew Stafford, who covered 374 yards and scored three touchdowns on 22 completions. Puka Nacua nabbed nine of those balls for 165 yards and a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Sam Darnold had a commanding performance of his own for the Seahawks, completing 25 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns. Ten of those throws went to Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who had 153 yards and a touchdown.

Sean McVay speaks after Rams’ NFCCG loss at Seahawks

After the game, Rams coach Sean McVay took the stand to share his thoughts on the loss. He expressed surprise at how the season ended for the team:

“The finality of it — really didn’t expect it…. I’m really numb. … I really thought we were going to be the team on that podium… I love this team. I wasn’t ready to stop working with them. Thought we had 2 more weeks together.”

Among the many mistakes that occurred in the game, he had particularly blunt words about Xavier Smith’s muffed punt:

“X-Man has been so reliable. He bobbled the first one, and we were lucky to get back on it. And that one, it was costly. I love him. He’s done a nice job. … That was a tough one.”

While the Rams go home, the Seahawks will face the New England Patriots at Super Bowl LX in two weeks.
