Elias Pettersson’s agent clears the air about Canucks star’s trade buzz, ever since Vancouver’s rebuild announcement

Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson’s agent, J.P. Barry, has cleared the air about the trade buzz surrounding Pettersson ever since the team announced its rebuild.

The Canucks are the most struggling team in the league this season, languishing at the bottom of the league standings with a 17-28-5 record. The club has recently signaled a full rebuild and is open to listening to offers for pending free agents and veteran players.

Barry addressed Elias Pettersson’s trade rumors on the Donnie and Dhali podcast, stating that the trade chatter around the 27-year-old isn’t new. Barry and his team have dealt with similar rumors before, so they’re experienced in handling and dismissing them.

“I take it with a grain of salt because I mean when a team isn’t doing well then everybody’s going to be discussed. We’ve talked about it in the past. It’s always hard for us when it’s a player who has a no-move, but that’s the reality of where things are when things don’t go well,” Barry said.

He added:

So, for us, we know it’s not real unless the GM is calling us and saying that there’s an actual team or a deal and “would you consider it?” So, nine out of ten times, it’s just a rumor.

Elias Pettersson is currently signed to an eight-year, $92.8 million contract with the Canucks. He will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2031-32 season.

His contract also carries a no-movement clause, which J.P. Barry referenced in explaining why trade talks remain just a rumor without direct GM outreach.
